As usual, I (eventually) sat at the bar. Dark, modern ambiance. Comfortable tables and bar. Be honest, you're not going to this place because it looks pretty. You're going here because the food is really good and the staff are even better. A tall gentleman greeted me at the door. Three seconds later, a host (perhaps a manager?) sat me at a table. 30 seconds later, I had a pitcher of water and a menu. Want a beer? Absolutely I want a beer. I ordered a beer. Old Speckled Hen. Good but not extensive beer list, but they had some great old standbys. My server was attentive but didn't go overboard. I appreciated that he cleared items from the table without checking in on me, and even stopped by at 9:55 when I still had a half-full beer to ask if I wanted to put in an order to retain happy hour prices. I didn't take him up on it, but I still appreciated him trying to save me a few bucks on the check. I ordered the BBQ burger with fried green beans instead of chips. GREAT choice. Go me. Food came out about 15 minutes later, and looked great. The beans were perfectly battered and fried, and especially delicious with a little ketchup. I will say they were a little on the salty side, but the beer helped cut that. The burger was fantastic. I think every major city has at least 3 places that can make a great burger, and this is one of those spots in the Twin Cities. The sauce and greens/onions were on the bottom of the burger, which is a subtle but positive detail. The BBQ sauce was good, if unremarkable, and the plate was served with both mayo and ketchup if I needed to add reinforcement sauce. I did not. It was cooked perfectly medium and tasted as great as it looked. Messy, delicious. Everything a burger should be. Around 10, most folks filtered out and they began cleaning the tables. I moved to the bar and ordered a beer there. The bartender was fantastic. Personable. Poured me a complimentary beer. Informed me that even though it was nearly 1030, there was no rush and to take my time. He facilitated conversation amongst me and several other folks at the bar who were staying for the long haul. He also seemed like a genuinely good person. I am a horrible person and forgot his name even after we shook hands, but his apron said "Mr. Miller". Well, Mr. Miller, you are fantastic at your job, and thanks for making my visit to G&tD a very enjoyable one. Go for the food, enjoy the service, stay for a beer or two. Visit the bar! Great atmosphere and a fantastic experience overall. 4.6/5. Could use a few more beers on tap, and tone down the salt on the beans. Everything else was perfect. As great as you can expect from a local pub. If you live nearby, you should probably be a regular here starting tomorrow.
